After partnering successfully with the American Carp Society for three years to host a Northeast regional tournament in Baldwinsville, the village is striking out on its own.

The 2009 Fall Carp Classic, sponsored by The Red Mill Inn, will be inaugurated Oct. 22 to 24.

"This is our first attempt locally to run our own tournament," said Baldwinsville Mayor Joe Saraceni, who also is a member of the Baldwinsville Carp Tournament Committee.

"When we looked at carp fishing on the Seneca River, we saw it as an economic development opportunity. We've learned a lot over the last three years. We've listened to a lot of the carp fisherman. We took a lot of notes and we've put together a format that we feel is going to have even more of a beneficial economic impact on the village."

The biggest difference from the Northeast tournament is fisherman won't have to fish for 50 consecutive hours.

Following a morning peg draw to assign teams to their fishing locations, competitive fishing will take place each day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"This way the fisherman can come into the village, eat dinner, visit the businesses and spend some time with family," Saraceni said.

The other big change is the prize money. There's more of it available and an opportunity to earn a grand prize of $25,000.

With 25 teams of two expected to participate, prizes will include $6,500 to the team that compiles the top overall weight for the four largest carp. There's also a $1,000 award for the biggest fish., and other cash prizes.

A team can win the grand prize of $25,000 if the weight of its four biggest fish exceeds 140 pounds.

"While this feat may appear difficult to accomplish, past Baldwinsville tournaments have shown that with the size of the carp caught from the Seneca River it is surely not impossible," said Jason Bernhardt, another member of the local planning committee.

The village is not ending its affiliation with the American Carp Society, which plans to be back with the Northeast Regional Tournament in May. The society is looking to sign a three-year deal with the village, Saraceni said.

"We have a relationship with those folks we're looking to continue," Saraceni said. "These tournaments can work together -- one in the spring, one in the fall."
