Tuesday, Carp tournament organizers were in Baldwinsville
talking to local business leaders about possibly
hosting a regional competition in local waterways
next year.
Just this weekend Oneida Lake hosted a bass fishing tournament. But the difference
between Carp fishing and Bass fishing, is the style of fishing and size of fish
that are caught.
Carp fishing has been popular in Europe for several
years and is just now catching on in the U.S. Last
year, the North Country hosted the World Carp Championship
on the St. Lawrence River. This proposed tournament
would be the first of five planned across the U.S.
David Moore, tournament coordinator for the American
Carp Society, said a tournament could be very lucrative
because the resources are available.
"It is, it's a very good area, I mean just right
there we are catching, we had several fish, anywhere
probably between 12 and 22 pounds, so the resources
are here. Nobody utilizes them and that's one of
the reasons we do these tournaments is to make
people aware of what's in their backyard," Moore
said.
Organizers hope to host the tournament next year
at the end of May or beginning of June.
