Frederic Labrousse and Numa Marengo together
caught more than a ton of carp to win the Northeast
Regionals carp fishing tournament in Baldwinsville,
which ended Saturday morning.
The two Internet journalists, who plan to start
a carp-oriented Web site by this summer, had
a narrow lead on the 35-team field Friday afternoon.
They built on it steadily throughout the evening
and night to win the $5,000 first prize.
When the tournament ended at 11 a.m. Saturday
morning, they had landed a total of 225 fish,
the biggest weighing 26 pounds, 8 ounces. Their
final weight total was 3,018 pounds, 5 ounces.
The tournament kicked off Thursday morning
and featured 50 hours of straight fishing on
assigned spots (called pegs) along the Seneca
River, south of Baldwinsville. The non-stop fishing
took its toll on many of the anglers, most getting
little or no sleep.
"The difference between first and second could
have been that lack of sleep and complete exhaustion
caught up with one of the teams," said David
Moore, tournament director.
The second place team of Tom Brooks and Colin
Peters of North Carolina landed 182 fish, finishing
with a total weight of 2,502 pounds, nine ounces.
They earned $2,500.
Moore said none of the two-person teams in
the tournament got skunked. The pair of Baldwinsville
Mayor Joe Saraceni and his brother Tony, who's
a village trustee, landed three fish, for a total
of 73 pounds. The biggest one was 16 pounds,
5 ounces.
The biggest fish of the tournament, weighing
32 pounds, 6 ounces, was caught by the husband
and wife team of John and Angela Bramley from
North Carolina.
The awards ceremony took place Saturday evening
on Papermill Island in Baldwinsville. A public
party with live entertainment followed.
Moore said the final results will be posted
Monday on the American Carp Society's Web site
at acstournaments.com.
He said all the anglers were impressed by the
hospitality shown by the tournament's local committee,
the greater Baldwinsville community, its people
and businesses. He said a decision was made by
American Carp Society officials Saturday to return
to Baldwinsville for next year's Northeast Regionals
tournament.
The tentative date is May 15-17, 2008. |
