Red Mill Inn is perfect spot to taste rich history of Erie Canal

John McHarrie Jr. and Stephen Baldwin built a three-story gristmill 179 years ago on the Seneca River, north of Syracuse. The construction took thousands of man-hours and two years to complete.
Today, visitors can spend the night in luxurious and comfortable rooms created in this same 1828 mill building. Original massive timbers and beams enhance the rooms, hallways and public rooms in what has become the Red Mill Inn, a name that evokes its humble origins. more...

B’ville hopes to spin carp into gold

Charlie Farrell has lived in Baldwinsville his entire life and like most residents of the village, paid little attention to the mammoth fish swimming near the bottom of the Seneca River.
"All of us who have been here think of carp as a junk fish," said Farrell, 57. "Who's interested in carp?"
Judging from the interest in this week's American Carp Society Northeast Regional Tournament, taking place Wednesday through Saturday, it appears Baldwinsville's "junk" may turn to gold. more...

The Quest for Carp

American Carp Society co-founder David Moore says it's all about treating the bottom-feeding fish with respect.
"I know we may sound like elitists, and maybe we are," he said. "Fish care. I can't stress it enough."
Moore, tournament director of this week's Northeast Regional carp fishing competition in Baldwinsville along the Seneca River, set up a few fishing rigs earlier this week behind the Red Mill Inn in Baldwinsville. He illustrated the finer points of catching and releasing carp, and talked about the sport he loves and hopes will someday take off in this country. more...

Carp Catching On

It was a familiar sight, to anyone who has ever watched chinooks and cohos porpoising at the surface of a rain-swollen pool before continuing upstream toward their Salmon River spawning grounds.
But this was not Pulaski, and those were not salmon.
No, this was downtown Baldwinsville, and the big, powerful-looking fish that had plastered a died-and-gone-to-heaven smile on the face of Katsuyoshi Fukuyama - "Katsu" for short - were carp. more...

Baldwinsville's 'Destiny'

In about six months the Baldwinsville business district will open its latest addition, the long awaited inn at the Mercer Mill site.
The 175-year-old mill on Paper Mill Island has been the subject of uncertain speculation for years. On a smaller scale, the project has been similar to the Destiny project in Syracuse, leaving Baldwinsville residents questioning whether improvements would ever be made to the aged structure. Move over Congel, because current owners Jake McKenna and Jay Bernhardt have announced they will deliver the completed Mercer Mill project on May 1, 2006. more...

It leaves most people in Baldwinsville excited, the project to turn the old, dilapidated Paper Mill into a 32 room inn. Over the last month, the building has been hit with rain and then, this week, wind, high wind running unabated down the Seneca River.
"We had a couple of small walls that got knocked down by the wind, but it was insignificant. An hours worth of work to stand them back up and continue on," said Jake McKenna with Parsons-McKenna Construction. more...

But they prefer a scaled-down version.
