John McHarrie Jr. and Stephen Baldwin built a three-story
gristmill 179 years ago on the Seneca River, north
of Syracuse. The construction took thousands of man-hours
and two years to complete.
Today, visitors can spend
the night in luxurious and comfortable rooms created
in this same 1828 mill building. Original massive
timbers and beams enhance the rooms, hallways and
public rooms in what has become the Red Mill Inn,
a name that evokes its humble origins. more... |

Charlie Farrell has lived in Baldwinsville his
entire life and like most residents of the village,
paid little attention to the mammoth fish swimming
near the bottom of the Seneca River.
"All of us who have been here think of
carp as a junk fish," said Farrell, 57. "Who's interested
in carp?"
Judging from the interest in this week's
American Carp Society Northeast Regional Tournament,
taking place Wednesday through Saturday, it appears
Baldwinsville's "junk" may
turn to gold.

American Carp Society co-founder David Moore says
it's all about treating the bottom-feeding fish with
respect.
"I know we may sound like elitists, and
maybe we are," he said. "Fish care. I can't stress
it enough."
Moore, tournament director of this week's
Northeast Regional carp fishing competition in Baldwinsville
along the Seneca River, set up a few fishing rigs
earlier this week behind the Red Mill Inn in Baldwinsville.
He illustrated the finer points of catching and releasing
carp, and talked about the sport he loves and hopes
will someday take off in this country. more...

The 175-year-old mill on Paper Mill Island

unabated down the Seneca River.
